Annette Funicello danced in an amateur show in Fullerton, California, of Swan Lake when Walt Disney discovered her. The teenager was just 13 years old at the time. Funicello's Mickey Mouse Club teammates were furious when Funicello joined her cast later in season one of the series, and not having to audition. Disney did the right thing as she quickly became The Mickey Mouse Club's best performer with her unique Adventures in Dairyland storyline. It was soon clear that Funicello had to record in order to exploit her talents as a teenage singer, and even though Annette was not a fan of her ability to sing, Disney engaged established arranger Tutti Camerata to guide her career as an artist on the recording. Funicello gradually grew comfortable with recording and loved her time with Camerata who is one of the few arrangers in their 40s that knew the basics of rock's early days. Her albums slowly improved beginning with her third album, Annette Sings Anka, possibly the first album to treat the music of a rock musician as a repertoire. Funicello was co-starring with Frankie Avalon in Beach Party. This was the first in a sequence of films about beach parties that were hugely famous. The scripts for all of the films were thoroughly reviewed and endorsed by Walt Disney so as to ensure the image of Annette was protected. The film cars of Funicello were used to upset other performers. Stevie Wonder was in Muscle Beach Party.
